Sun Huaishan, a former senior political advisor, was sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined 3 million yuan (about 438,000 U.S. dollars) for taking bribes, by the intermediate people's court of Hulun Buir city in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Monday.

Sun was formerly a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee and head of the Committee for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Compatriots and Overseas Chinese of the CPPCC National Committee.

Sun was convicted of accepting money and gifts worth over 39.75 million yuan, personally or through persons of interest, between 2000 and 2016, the court said. Sun's illicit gains will be turned over to the state treasury.

The court found that from 1994 to 2016, Sun was guilty of crimes, including taking advantage of his positions to assist certain organizations and individuals in procurement of land use rights, enterprise operations, project approval and job promotions.

Sun pleaded guilty, showed repentance and was cooperative in returning his illegal gains, mitigating the sentence, the court said.
