Jinshan: A Courageous Transformation

 2025-10-14  8

The word chosen for Jinshan District is "Lone Courage." These two characters are deeply embedded in the district’s historical fabric. From the 1970s, when tens of thousands reclaimed land from the sea to address the nation’s "clothing shortage," to investing 40 billion yuan over the past decade in a resolute effort to improve the environment, and now taking the lead in developing emerging industries such as unmanned aerial vehicles, Jinshan has consistently demonstrated an indomitable and forward-moving spirit.

However, Jinshan’s development also faces challenges. As the only district in Shanghai without a metro line, its transportation shortcomings are prominent. Additionally, there are gaps in high-quality education, healthcare, and commercial facilities, which weaken its appeal to talent and represent core constraints on development.

To break this impasse and attract talent, Jinshan has clearly defined its focus as "transforming for new development and shaping a new image," striving to shed outdated labels such as "chemicals equal pollution," "agriculture equals backwardness," and "outskirts equal the periphery." The district is accelerating efforts to address its weaknesses: high-standard facilities like the Jinshan Branch of Ruijin Hospital and the Huadong Normal University No. 2 High School are under rapid construction; the Nanfeng Line of the municipal railway has commenced, marking the end of Jinshan’s history without rail transit; and areas like Huilong Lake International Community are being developed into high-quality living zones.

At the industrial level, Jinshan is firmly advancing its transformation. On one hand, it is steering traditional chemical industries toward green extensions in new materials, new energy, and biomedicine, with the Carbon Valley Green Bay Industrial Park achieving remarkable production growth. On the other hand, it is creating new tracks from scratch—the East China UAV Base has been upgraded into a specialized low-altitude economy park in Shanghai, seizing early opportunities in the industry. The construction of the Shanghai Bay Area Science and Innovation City further demonstrates its ambition to build an eco-friendly, smart sci-tech hub.

Moreover, leveraging the opportunity presented by the opening of Legoland, Jinshan is integrating resources across its northern, central, and southern regions to create a new image of the "Shanghai Bay Area" as a livable, workable, and visitable destination, aiming to secure a place on the cultural and tourism map of the Yangtze River Delta.

The path to rise is fraught with thorns, but Jinshan, with the spirit of a "lone warrior," is moving forward with steady steps and relentless determination. Every transformation and change is worth anticipating.
