Jinshan proves its worth with the Shanghai-Ningbo mega-bridge

Recently, the much-anticipated national "15th Five-Year Plan" was officially released, explicitly including the "Shanghai-Ningbo Cross-Sea Passage Project."

This passage is a rail-road combined cross-sea project connecting Jinshan, Shanghai, and Cixi, Ningbo. With a total length of approximately 70 kilometers and an estimated investment of 100 billion yuan, it will become the longest cross-sea bridge in China. The passage will take a straight-line route across Hangzhou Bay, reducing travel time between Shanghai and Ningbo to just 40 minutes and achieving true urban integration.

Historically, it takes six to eight years for a mega-project to move from national planning to construction. Given that the Shanghai-Ningbo Passage, with its combined rail-road design, exceeds the scale and investment of both the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed railway and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, its construction timeline may be even longer. However, the project’s inclusion in the national plan alone is enough to reshape expectations for Jinshan District’s development prospects.

Jinshan has long struggled to benefit from Shanghai’s main urban development due to its geographically constrained location. Once the Shanghai-Ningbo Passage is realized, Jinshan will completely break free from this limitation. In the future, with seamless transfers between the Shanghai-Ningbo Passage and the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed railway at Jinshan Station, Jinshan will emerge as a key transportation hub in southern Shanghai, taking on the core role of radiating Shanghai’s influence southward and linking with Zhejiang Province.

This time, Jinshan is no longer a bystander. With the backing of a national strategy and its own accumulated development foundation over the years, this once "remote, marginal, and underdeveloped" land is now embracing its long-awaited moment in the spotlight.
