Thirty tenants of the housing rental company Ziroom have come together to ask an environmental testing company with China Metrology Accreditation to measure the level of formaldehyde in their homes, following reports of people becoming sick in Ziroom apartments.

A report in Chengdu Economic Daily said that the 30 tenants in Sichuan Province made the decision to have their homes tested after hearing about a Ziroom tenant who died recently from acute leukemia two months after moving into a room rented from Ziroom. The room was later found to contain an excessive concentration of formaldehyde, which possibly caused his leukemia. And testing by another Ziroom tenant reportedly found that the level of formaldehyde in his room was three times higher than the national standards allow.

Ziroom has said that it will reimburse the cost of the formaldehyde testing and provide some compensation for tenants if their homes are found to contain an excessive concentration of formaldehyde.
