Ride-hailing security demands growing in China

Different municipalities across China are taking action in the wake of the current scandal engulfing Didi Chuxing.

Authorities in Guizhou's provincial capital, Guiyang, are now requiring online car-hailing platforms to install instant "call the police" devices on their locally-registered cars, reports gywb.cn.

This comes amid the massive outrage in China following the weekend murder of a Didi passenger in Zhejiang Province.

The 20-year old woman was allegedly raped and killed on Saturday by a driver she hailed using Didi's Hitch service.

While the Hitch program has been suspended by Didi in the wake of the killing, authorities in Guiyang say they want to ensure that other ride-hailing services in the city are providing additional security for their customers.

The southern city of Shenzhen is also threatening to pull Didi's operating license in that city if the company doesn't take immediate steps to upgrade its security for passengers.

Meanwhile, authorities in Hubei's capital, Wuhan, are asking Didi to investigate a series of disparaging online comments about the 20-year old victim reportedly being made by the company's drivers on Didi's official regional QQ group.
