A court in Zhengzhou has ordered the family of a Didi driver found to have murdered his passenger to pay 620,000 yuan (around 93,000 U.S. dollars) in compensation to the family of his victim.

Liu Zhenhua was found to have raped and murdered Li Mingzhu, 20-year-old who ordered a Didi ride share late one night in May last year. Liu was a registered driver for Didi's hitchhiking service.

Liu was confirmed dead one month later by local police. He had committed suicide by jumping into a river shortly after killing Li.

The court found that the killer's family had attempted to hide their assets in order to minimize the amount of compensation they would be required to pay by the court.

Court documents show that the victim's family has reached a compensation agreement with Didi, but the details of the agreement have not been released.

The murder of Li Mingzhu ignited public outrage across China. Didi came under fire for what was seen to be a poor safety record and a lack of cooperation with the police. The company's image was further tarnished when another passenger was killed by a driver in September, leading Didi to suspend its hitchhiking service. The Ministry of Transport launched an investigation into the safety record of all ride sharing services, and Didi has since added new safety features into its app.
