Jinshan's Remarkable Turnaround: From Industrial Legacy to Innovation Hub
2025-11-18 9

On November 16th, the Liberation Daily once again featured an article about Jinshan, Shanghai, stating that the district is frequently making headlines and writing a remarkable comeback story.
The article reviewed major projects in Jinshan over the past five years: the official commencement of construction for the Shanghai Legoland Resort, the full-scale groundbreaking of the Ruijin Hospital Jinshan Campus, the launch of the first phase of the Nanfeng Line—a regional express rail, the announcement of Syngenta Group's Global Crop Protection China Innovation Center settling in Jinshan, the official start of the Lexus new energy vehicle project, and the newly completed Huayuan No. 2 Jinshan Experimental School officially opening, among others.
For Jinshan, these major projects did not emerge out of thin air, nor did their impact form overnight. In the past, the old label of "chemical industry equals pollution" made industrial development in Jinshan extremely challenging. A decade ago, with extraordinary determination, Jinshan initiated three rounds of comprehensive environmental remediation, investing approximately 36 billion yuan in total and implementing 810 remediation projects, ultimately delivering an outstanding green report card.
Today, with the launch and operation of numerous major industrial projects, Jinshan's high-end chemical new materials industry has achieved an output value of nearly 170 billion yuan, successfully ranking among Shanghai's first batch of trillion-yuan industrial clusters.
Currently, Jinshan is focusing on industrial transformation as its core, coordinating spatial and governance transformations. Simultaneously, it emphasizes leveraging scientific innovation, digitalization, and cultural tourism to drive rapid shifts between old and new growth drivers, accumulating strong momentum for future development and paving the way for new opportunities.
